LESSONS FROM A "NO DOUBT" CONCERT

avatar
What we learned...Outside the No Doubt concert in the SF Bay area the other night were various photo booths including one from Wild94.9 radio.  People at the concert could stop by the booths and get their picture taken.  Then, they were given a laminated card with the url and, in some cases a code, which let them go on line and get their picture.  When you're handing out brochures, etc, you do it to get people to go the website or listen to the radio station.  All three cards were sponsored..so, some extra bucks coming in.  There are simple ways like the one Wild did, which is just go to the website and scan through a bunch of pictures hoping to find your own.  But, there are sophisticated ways, where the card is scanned, gives you a code on the card and you go on line and type in your code to go directly to your picture.  After seeing this, I would never just hand out a brochure again...It shows how you can provide a direct incentive to get people to go to your website.  Of course, if you were a radio station and wanted to add listeners, you could tell them to listen for their name or number on the air for prizes all week, etc.  People definitely want to see themselves...so searching for their picture is good. However, I would have made it even more special with some sort of backdrop..a stand up of Gwen Stefani, or at least the call letters...

I would have also been doing interviews and posted those on line so the concert goers could go directly to a spot on the net and hear their interviews...this is a no brainer with programs like livecast, ustream, and others. Of course, some of those interviews can be played on the air as well...

A word about the potential audience.  These are actives you are talking to..people who will get up off the couch, buy a ticket and hassle through the traffic and crowds to the concert.  So, they tend to be trendsetters and they not only represent themselves but a host of others who they influence.  I would treat them like gold if I was looking for more listeners or more traffic to my site.  Overall, this is a great idea, but, with very little money and effort, the results for the station and the sponsor could be so much greater.

I would appreciate your comments below...

Storm Roberts is the long time morning show host at Entercom owned WKTK-FM in Gainesville..home to the Florida Gators..WKTK-FM's 100,000 watt signal covers northern Florida...with the down economy and radio depressed, WKTK is doing great..business is good and they're still having fun there with a huge listening audience.  We asked Storm how we were doing and he responded with this...

Thanks to New Radio Star, Bob & Pam, for their tireless mission to make me the best prepared, most up-to-date personality on the radio each and every morning.

Over my 20 plus years doing mornings, at WKTK Gainesville/Ocala, Florida, I've had a lot of prep services send me samples of their products. NONE can compare to New Radio Star. Trying to prep a show with the other services is like drinking out of a fire hose. Too much filler material and so-called jokes nobody could ever use. New Radio Star is like the fillet, grilled to perfection, served hot and juicy every morning. The new state-of-the-art Blogtronix platform with RSS, audio, video and other features keeps you on the pulse of the world during your show. If something happens in news, sports, entertainment or Paris Hilton, you know immediately!
Easy to navigate, information-rich and when somebody invents a new digital bell or whistle, Bob has already added it before you've heard of it.
Stay fresh. Stay cutting edge. Stay #1 with New Radio Star.
Don't do a show without it.
