From Bob Weber in today's Chicago Tribune.......
One fact is not an argument...underflated tires cause blowouts..and tires must be constantly checked to make sure the proper amount of air is in them. However, the molucules in oxygen permeate the tire and eventually the air will leave. Nitrogen, on the other hand has larger molucules and do not permeate the rubber on the tire..meaning, that, theoretically, you won't have to inflate the tire as often when you fill the tire with nitrogen. The drawback is that nitrogen generally costs money..as much as $10 a tire in some places to fill it up...However, there is a movement to start offering it for free at some places...
Bob explains in his in-depth article..."nitrogen won't support combustion so it has been used in critical situations for years: In aircraft tires, including Air Force One and the Space Shuttle. The military uses it in many vehicles as does NASCAR."
Tire manufacturers won't commit to whether or not nitrogen is better for their tires..they, so far, have only said it won't hurt...
